Thank You Note Etiquette

Showing our appreciation is a timeless etiquette tradition for good reason. It always makes the receiver feel touched that you took the time and made the effort to remember them.

And while this might come as a surprise, the art of sending a handwritten thank you note is still alive and well! In fact, in today’s digital world, it’s become more important than ever. Of course, there are times when a quick text or email is the perfect way to say an initial thanks, such as if you want to express immediate gratitude after receiving a surprise gift on your doorstep or attending a dinner party. However, when you have more time the next day, follow up with a handwritten note that you pop in the mail. It takes a matter of minutes and will really mean so much to its recipient. And how lovely is it to open your mail and find a letter? Just the best!

To make your note stand out, consider investing in a beautiful set of personalized stationery. The design you choose represents your personal style, and there are so many fabulous options to choose from. Plus, I genuinely think you will be more excited to write notes if you have a darling set to use. Often, we can find such joy in these little details. Some of my favorite brands are Joy Creative Shop, Dear Elouise, Arzberger, Papier, and Sugar Paper. Etsy also has some wonderful and well-priced options!

Here is a thank you note formula you can trust as well as a few tips to remember. From start to stamp!

The Formula:

Step 1: The way you address the person in the opening line reflects formality and your relationship with them. Traditionally, its best to begin with “Dear X,”

Step 2: Open the note with a thoughtful detail, such as “I was thrilled to receive your gift in the mail today” or “We loved spending the weekend with you!”

Step 3: Thank them for the gift, experience, help, etc. Also, be sure to write a sentence or two about what the gift meant to you, why you enjoyed the experience, and so forth.

Step 4: Sign the letter depending upon the formality of your relationship, such as “Love,” “Warmest, or” “Best Wishes.”

Tips:

  • Type the note in a word doc first so you can clearly articulate your thoughts and make any edits. Then, hand write the note on your chosen stationery.
  • Use black or dark blue ink.
  • Strive to write your notes within 2 weeks of the gift, interview, or occasion. However, always remember, better late than never!
  • Confirm their address before mailing the letter.
  • Make sure you have enough stamps on the envelope, as some oversized envelopes require two.
