We have been renovating and decorating our home for almost a decade, and I have come to learn that a house that feels beautiful, warm, inviting, and truly personal is created through layers of thoughtful detail and design – think every one of Nancy Meyer’s homes in her movies. It’s the layers that add charm, dimension, and soften a space and make it feel lived in and loved rather than styled. These special elements quietly tell an enchanting story: brass hardware that has aged elegantly over time, a collection of antique blue and white porcelain plates hanging on a wall, a unique pattern of tile in a children’s bathroom, or a fabulous bowl resting on the counter filled with fresh lemons.

Our homes shape so much of our lives, from the kitchen where cookies were baked on rainy afternoons to the dining table where birthdays were celebrated year after year. Even guests remember how a home made them feel long after they leave it, I know I feel this way too! One of my best friends has the most stunning house that epitomizes the essence of layers. Incredible fabrics and wallpaper, antiques, art work, and treasured finds from their travels make their home both exceptionally beautiful and inviting, and leave an imprint on everyone who visits.

So how do you create intentional layers and captivating details, and achieve a home where everyone wants to be? First identify your style, so the home will feel authentically like you – from the fabrics to the decorative objects. And start with pieces you genuinely love and allow your home to evolve naturally over time. For instance, if you love botanical prints, begin intentionally collecting them and then hang a series in your living room. Add sconces with custom shades to a hallway to create a warm glow. Details that make a house a home can also mean choosing ornate millwork for bunk beds in a bedroom like below, or cleverly upholstering walls (and ceilings!) with both fabric and trim. We have the help of an amazing interior designer, and that has made all the difference in completing our home and brining our vision to life. I also find that reading books by my favorite designers has offered endless inspiration and helped so much in finding the style we wanted to achieve in our home.
