Traveling is the ultimate treat. We love venturing around both America and the world, and now that our children are older, are having so much fun exploring new destinations. While packing all four of us for a recent family trip to California, I realized there needed to be some pro-tips when it comes to elevating one’s packing game (as it really is an art!).
Whether going on an upcoming ski weekend this winter or trip to a balmy beach for spring break, here are my top 10 tips so packing will be a breeze as you can travel as your best self.
- We prefer to carry on, as it’s so much easier to hop off the plane with your bag instead of waiting for the luggage carousel, and it also encourages you to only pack the essentials. I love this brand for carry-on bags. However, if you must check, be sure to properly label all your bags and even consider popping an Apple Air Tag in each one in case they are lost. Also, if you must check, carry on a separate suitcase with your toiletries, valuables, and wardrobe essentials (for instance, your bridesmaids dress for a wedding).
- Pack a small and portable steamer to tame any wrinkled clothing. This is a great one.
- A dear friend gifted me a set of these fabulous packing cubes for my birthday several years ago and they are a game changer. You can even have them monogramed with your initials which is so lovely.
- Include a dirty laundry bag so you can keep all your clean clothing separate. Also, if you’re going on a beach vacation (especially with kids) a wet/dry bag is a must.
- Make a list of events you’ll be attending on your trip, and plan outfits you can wear multiple times, or pieces that you can mix and match to create new outfits. Also, lay out your outfits, accessories, and shoes ahead so you know exactly what you’re wearing and when, and you can even pack each outfit in its own cube if you want to be extra organized.
- Check the weather before you leave to ensure you’re prepared for any climate.
- Hang all your clothing up once you arrive at your destination, so the clothing stays fresh.
- Roll garments for extra space in your suitcase.
- Wear your bulkiest items on the flight so you can free up space in your suitcase. For instance, if you are traveling to Colorado and brining cowboy boots, wear them on the plane.
- Pack a travel jewelry case to stay organized and keep your valuables safe.
